Thomas Kiely

Cork City South West

I am a qualified Sheet Metal Fabricator who worked on jobs in Ireland & abroad for over 12 years. Originally from Mallow in North Cork I have been living in the City for over 10 years with my partner and kids. Currently I am a stay at home dad of 3 small boys and have had to fight for resources at every corner for my Autistic Son.

I am involved in my community, getting kids active through sports.  I completed a six month Cork Sports Partnership course and now I give coaching myself.  I am a member of St. Finbarr’s Hurling and Football Club, as a coach, and now I am into my second year as chairperson of the street league section, which I thoroughly enjoy.  I have also been coaching soccer with Everton AFC for the last number of years.

I have been involved in the running of Rounders (a GAA sport) at the Lough for the past few summers, it is a great success for both adults and kids alike – people are meeting each other that might not have done so otherwise.

I am a volunteer at the Rainbow Club, for families and kids affected by Autism.  Since my son was diagnosed the Rainbow Club has been a massive support, not just for my family but for hundreds of families throughout Cork.  There is great enjoyment in helping others where I can.

In 2014 I ran for City Council as an Independent candidate with the backing of The People’s Convention in the Local Election, I missed out by just 2 votes – I am asking for your backing again, this time as part of the Housing Rights & Reform Alliance.

I have been campaigning on the issue of housing, for fair rents, security of tenancy and against homelessness for many many years. I have been active on the issue of corruption and the waste of resources that takes place in City Hall, Council needs to focus on providing services to our community, not junkets and big projects that soak up all our money.

When it was needed I stood with the people in the battle against privatisation of Irish Water, an unjust tax, I helped organise the protests in Cork and Nationwide.

I feel that the people are not being represented at the moment, we keep hearing that Government and Council has to make hard decisions, but for who?? Not for themselves that’s for sure, we keep hearing them say ‘We feel the people’s pain’, but what pain do they feel realistically?? Our Constitution states you vote for someone to Represent you, it’s time we started holding these people accountable, they work for us not the other-way around!

If the people of Cork vote for me there is one unique thing they’ll get that isn’t happening today, the people will have the say and be represented at City Hall. Our Alliance has a programme to ensure that the people will decide on all the crucial issues facing our city – housing projects, the flood defences, incinerators, traffic bans etc.

Enough is enough, people are looking for change. Why vote for the usual parties who promise everything and then claim their hands are tied and do nothing.  We have no accountability in City Hall. I want to be that change, if you put your trust in me I will fight for you on all issues Local or National, with the people’s best interest at heart – that’s my promise.
